Meet Gwen Whitfield

How can mastering your mindset change your life?

For me it’s never beating myself up again about having a less-than-perfect life.

Perfect home, perfect car, perfect family, perfect waist-line? No thanks.

Now, i’m on a mission.

I spent years trying to be perfect. And if I knew I wasn’t going to be great at something? I’d just throw my hands up in the air, grab some nachos and curl up on the couch, binge watching Friends.

It was easier wallowing than trying because I knew I’d never live up to this idealized version of life that I thought everybody else was living.

And then one day, I woke the bleep up.

and so can you.

In the spring of 2020, as the world was shut down and we were stuck at home, I was sitting in my bathroom, feeling very depressed, I noticed that I was telling myself:

  • You’re so fat. Why can’t you just control yourself?
  • You’re house is a mess. You’ll never have a beautiful home.
  • Your so out of shape, you’ll never be happy.

And then… there was this moment where time just stopped. Everything got quiet and it was as if I took a step back and saw myself talking to myself.

I wondered… how can you be so mean to yourself? And I had no answer.

In that moment, I realized that if I could be understanding toward and have compassion for everyone else in my life, shouldn’t I treat myself the same way?

When I was going through my mental metamorphosis, I was all alone.

But you don’t have to be!

More About Gwen

Brendan, Gwen, Morgan Jr and Morgan III

I was born and raised in Memphis, TN. We lived in Bartlett until I was about 5 and then moved outside of town to Cordova which is now a part of the city of Memphis.

I went to Mt. Pisgah elementary school and graduated from Germantown High School in 1990.

I spent a year and a half at Ole Miss pretty much floundering.

Then I went home to Memphis State (now the University of Memphis) for a semester. I didn’t like it and decided to go back to Ole miss the fall of my junior year.

I still struggled with what to do. I switched my major several times, and almost finished the entire pre-pharmacy program but decided to quit that when I made a C on my first exam in the second semester of Organic Chemistry.

I ended up finally graduating after 5 1/2 years with a degree in Music Education. I was supposed to go and be a performer but I had zero self confidence and massive audition anxiety. I never really got nervous when I was actually performing. It was just the auditions that really broke me.

Sometimes, I wonder what my life would have been like if I’d had the mental health support that I have had in the past few years. But in the end, I’ve had a fabulous life with a wonderful family. So really, I have no regrets!

I grew up the youngest of 4 sisters with wonderful parents.

I met my husband Morgan in 1996 and we were married in 1997. We’ve lived in so many places over the course of our life together! We started out in Jackson, Ms, moved to Jackson, TN. Then we spent a couple of years in Richmond, VA, a year overseas in Steffisburg, Switzerland, a year in Hinton, WV, four and 1/2 years in Donalsonville, GA and finally moved to Forest, VA where we’ve lived since 2009.

We have 2 amazing boys, Morgan III and Brendan.

Morgan graduated with a degree in Chemical Engineering from Virginia Tech in 2021 and is currently pursuing a Phd in Chem E at UMASS.

Brendan graduated from high school last year and is now at Virginia Tech. He is studying Computer Modeling Data Analytics and is a member to the Swim Team.

Brendan will be attending the USA Swimming Olympic Trials in 2024 and will compete in the 100 Meter Butterfly and the 50 and 100 Meter Freestyle events.

I am not a certified coach or licensed therapist. Any advice I give is all anecdotal. (Although I did take Psych 101 at U of M and have done a fair amount of talking with my own therapist. 🤪 )

However, I have taken both the individual and professional courses in Positivity Neuroplasticity from Rick Hanson and spent years reading and studying various methodologies about mindset and mental health.

I am also a fan of the Law of Attraction and A Course in Miracles. Both are a little in the woo-woo side, but have very helpful teachings and I have found great inspiration from both.

In the end, it’s not what we attain in life, it’s how we feel about ourselves and our circumstances. I know if I’m wallowing and feeling sorry for myself, it’s really hard for me to pull myself up and move forward.

Working on the mental part and having a growth mindset have allowed me to find the self-confidence and security to pursue more than I ever thought I could and share my knowledge and experience in ways I never thought possible.

Absolutely! You can check out my Mindset Mentoring sessions here.

I have a unique and very clear process for helping create a shift that will retrain your brain and rewire your thoughts.
