WHAT’S INSIDE OUR 8WEEK MOVING CHECKLIST PDF
8 WEeks before the move
Declutter & Organize
Sort through belongings and decide what to keep, sell, donate, or throw away. Schedule donations or yard sales if necessary.
Create a Moving Binder or Folder
Keep important documents like lease agreements, moving quotes, and phone numbers of everyone you need to contact in one place. Make dividers for category you need – like those above.
6 WEeks before the move
Start Gathering Packing Supplies
Purchase or gather boxes, bubble wrap, packing tape, and markers. Consider getting specialty boxes for fragile items (dishes, glassware)
Get Moving Quotes
Contact at least three moving companies to compare quotes. (read my post on Moving Company Scams before you start calling!) If you’re renting a truck or pod, compare rental prices and book it in advance.
TOP TIP: Check the FMCSA website to make sure your company is legit!
4 WEeks before the move
Start Packing Non-Essential Items
Begin packing things you don’t use daily (seasonal items, books, decorations). Label boxes by room and contents for easy unpacking.
Notify Utilities & Service Providers
Contact electricity, water, gas, internet, and trash companies to schedule disconnection at your old home and reconnection at your new place.
Change Your Address
Visit the post office or go online to update your mailing address. Notify banks, insurance providers, subscription services, and any other relevant parties of your move.
2 WEeks before the move
Pack Remaining Non-Essentials
Pack up more items, leaving only daily necessities unpacked. Disassemble furniture that you don’t need until the move.
Make Arrangements for Pets or Children
If needed, arrange for someone to watch your pets or children during the move to reduce stress.
Make Arrangements professional cleaning
If you don’t want to clean the house yourself, now is the time to schedule help. Contact friends and family if you need recommendations for a professional cleaner or cleaning service such as carpet cleaning or pressure washing.

Pack an Essentials Box
Set aside a box or suitcase with essentials like toiletries, a change of clothes, medications, important documents, and snacks for the moving day. Put your important documents in a fire safe box if not already in one.
Confirm Moving Details
If hiring movers, confirm the date and time with the moving company. Double-check details with truck rentals or friends helping with the move.
Clean Your Old Home
Clean each room thoroughly after it’s emptied. Patch any holes in the walls and take care of small repairs if needed.
Plan snacks for moving day
Shop for drinks and snacks for moving day. You and your movers/friends will need water and snacks to keep your energy up!

Final Walkthrough
Do a final check of each room to ensure nothing is left behind…make sure to check the dishwasher. LOL
Ensure that important documents and your essentials box are easily accessible and NOT on the moving truck!
Meet Movers or Load Truck
If using movers, be present to oversee the loading process. If moving yourself, gather friends and begin loading the truck early.
Lock Up
Ensure all doors and windows are locked before you leave. Return keys to the landlord or new tenants, if applicable.
If you are organized and plan, your move will go so much smoother and you’ll navigate this process with relative ease…especially if you use our moving checklist pdf!
I say “relative” because there are always unforeseen things that come up.
For me, the last move was very emotional. I loved our townhouse in a way I’ve never loved a home before.
That emotional attachment was rough. Even though I was ready for a change, and this last move was a really wonderful thing for our family, I grieved the loss of our beautiful home.
Allow space for your feelings, whatever they may be, as you plan, pack and organize logistics!
