PackIng moving supplies you need to invest in!

I have moved WAAAYYYYY to many times. Each move was different, for different reasons and had very different outcomes.

Our most recent move was definitely the best fit for us, but the logistical part of moving was a nightmare. I learned more about moving and moving companies that I’d ever learned before.

Check out that nightmare of a story here. Packing materials were really what got us in the horrible situation, and if I had to do it all over again, I’d buy my own supplies and pack EVERYTHING myself.

But in this post, I’m sharing what packing moving supplies I always invest in to make our moves as easy and stress free as possible. Even though we had a mover this time, we still had to pack up a lot for storage to show the house.

Do packing supplies really make a difference?

YES. YES THEY DO!

Let’s get started and I’ll explain why as we go along.

1. High-Quality Moving Boxes

My favorite boxes are ones that have built-in, perforated handles. They just make transporting the boxes SO much easier.

I usually buy them at UHaul. The ones from the big-box stores usually don’t have the handles.

I tend to buy mostly Medium boxes because you can fill them pretty full and they’re not too heavy. I’ve learned over the years that bigger boxes might seem the way to go, but they are NOT.

I also buy book boxes because then I’m forced to pack those lightly. Books are VERY HEAVY. Lol

I always splurge on glass pack boxes and wardrobe boxes.

We usually don’t buy special TV boxes because our TVs aren’t that high dollar. If you have a really nice TV, you might want to get a nicer box for that.

We tend to keep all of the boxes for the high ticket items, like computers and my juicer. That way when we move, we can use those boxes that are made specifically for those items.

Yes, it’s additional stuff to store, but they’ve always come in handy, and we feel like they are totally worth keeping!

2. Paper tape

For years and years and many moves, we’ve used regular tape with a dispenser.

The move before this saw me ditching the dispenser because it was always more of a hassle than helpful.

This move, we tried out paper tape and it was revolutionary. I always thought it wouldn’t be as sturdy, but it IS.

Bonus? It’s so much easier to just rip than regular tape. I can do it without scissors, tho they do help.

5 stars for the Paper Tape!

3. Furniture Sliders

When we were young and dumb, we would just muscle our furniture around. On about our seventh move, we stumbled across furniture sliders.

Oh my word.

If you have to move yourself get some furniture sliders. They will save your floors and your back!

I keep them around an easily accessible so in case, we need to slide furniture around, we don’t have to pick it up! It’s fantastic and totally worth the money.

4. Packing Paper

About ten years ago ago, I came across a box of packing paper at U-Haul. Before I would just use towels and paper towels and really try to keep the cost down for moving supplies, but a box of packing paper is about $25 and goes a very long way.

I always invest and buy a box of packing paper. It’s perfect for wrapping all of your glassware and fragile items.

Bonus, if you have any silver you can wrap it up and it will help keep it from tarnishing. I always wrap my silver in white tissue paper and then will wrap it up in a little bit of packing paper. We rarely use it so that really helps keep it from turning black.

5. Moving Blankets or Pads

When we move ourselves, we always rent a dozen blankets. Like I said before, we used to cheap out and try to use our own towels and whatever blankets I could find.

But we have a lot of antiques that have been handed down through the past 20 years, and we just don’t have enough of our own.

So by renting a dozen, we always have plenty to wrap the most cherished items in. That way we know they are as protected as they can be in the moving truck.

6. Stretch Wrap (Plastic Wrap)

I found this stuff really late in the game, but it is a wand of magical plastic that is a must have!

It comes in different sizes but I usually just buy the smaller size.

  • I’ve used it to wrap my paint brushes so I don’t have to change their containers.
  • I’ve used it to mops and brooms together, so they’re easier to transport.
  • I’ve used it to wrap furniture with drawers so the drawers don’t shift around or fall out during the move.
  • In the smaller furniture, I’ll even leave the stuff in the drawers because I know if I wrap it it’s gonna stay.

I can go crazy with this moving stretch wrap. And it is totally worth the money.

7. a really good sharpie

Never underestimate the importance of a new sharpie!

I always buy a larger one, so I don’t run out of ink.

Labeling all of your boxes very, very detailed is incredibly helpful!

I’ll make a bullet point list on my boxes, so I know exactly what’s in there. And that uses a lot of sharpie!

8. Dolly or Hand Truck

this can gonna go hand-in-hand with your furniture sliders. We always rent two kinds of dollies. The handtruck and an appliance dolly.

If you have to move a washer and dryer or any other large, really heavy item, you have got to get an appliance dolly. The appliance dolly is different, because it is wider and has a locking strap that you can wrap around your heavy piece.

Sometimes it’s nice to have the flat dolly too. If we have to move our piano, that flat furniture, dolly is great.

9. Mattress Covers

I used to not really worry about our mattresses in a move. But recently I’ve gotten more conscientious about keeping them clean, and that included during the move! Having a mattress covers for mattresses, gave me the peace of mind that they would be protected.

These have great reviews on Amazon and are incredibly reasonably priced.

10. Ziploc Bags

When I move, I always buy a variety of sized Ziploc bags. I will get anything from the quart size to the 2.5 gallon ones.

They really come in handy when you’re moving junk drawers, and smaller items. You can keep things labeled easily and they can all be thrown into a box very quickly.

when it comes to moving, these packing moving supplies are DEFINITELY worth the investment.

Moving is incredibly stressful and part of that is the expense.

Balancing your need to stay in a budget and the added benefit of purchasing some of these supplies is an individual decision.

But I’ve found when I spend the little extra money to get quality supplies like these, it really helps to minimize the frustration of moving…which is priceless.
