You might not know it from reading this blog, but I love to sew. I loved hand-made clothes growing up and was always asking my mom to make me dresses.
When I was about 10, my grandaddy bought me my first sewing machine. I’d sit in the basement and make barbie clothes and pretend to make quilts. I never quite finished one of those, but I just loved sitting there with my little antique-y machine playing around. I still have this machine. It’s not working right now, but I just can’t part with it!
As I grew older, I started making my own clothes and even made a couple of my bridesmaids’ dresses. Here is one from my friend, Tracy’s wedding:
I’m the tall girl, second from the right. Love that red hair with the dark roots… and what appears to be white pancake makup. So classy. But at least, the dress looks good. I am always amazed at how well I can get self-made clothes to fit. I bumble my way through it without a dress form, and by some incredibly marvelous miracle, it always seems to come together!
I haven’t made any clothes for myself in years upon years, but I’m thinking I want to give it a go again and, maybe, take a pattern-making class or two in Charlottesville.
