I’ve never been one much for New Year’s Resolutions.  I would make them as a gangly, frizzy haired eighth grader and a week in, I was stuffing my face with sugar laden flour sticks.
Le sigh.
This year, I’ve gotten laser focused on becoming a healthier, happier, more successful person.  I’ve been reading loads of great books to help me uncover the potential that I know lies with me.  It’s been locked in a cage of self-doubt and  fear of the unknown.
Right before Christmas I stumbled upon a book by Gary Keller called The One Thing.
Entire pack of lightbulbs moment. Â Like, it unveiled for me the secret to being successful. What eluded me for years, I finally understood. Â The hardened, milky scales of confusion fell from my eyes.
And I realized three important life lessons:
1. It’s good to choose one Main Thing.
Choosing one thing to focus on does not limit me to never pursuing any other interests.
I can focus on my “thing” and take sabbaticals every few weeks to enjoy all the other interests I have.  My one thing may change as I grow, but giving myslef the permission to focus radically on that one thing will build a successful life.
2. Â It’s important to become comfortable with the unknown.
No matter what I pursued in my life, I would obsess over the Outcome.
The Outcome is an elusive little birdie… until you get there.  Better to befriend the unknown, hold it’s hand and just take a walk, reveling in the act of doing what you are doing.  Become entranced with the doing part of the work and leave all the rest to the God.
3. Habits and Routine are the door to freedom.
What I once thought was boring, type-A behavior has become my snuggle bunny… my long-lost twin sister… Â my lifestyle cup of joe.
Getting into daily, monthly, yearly routines make life run like a greasy wheel in a sparkling new Porsche.
Life purrs.
I’ve always wanted to feel light and airy and just have fun, and I now know the secret to being successful:
Successful People are simply those with Successful Habits.
Rock on.

Finally.
My first habit of the year? To get up at 5 am and do yoga first thing in the morning.
My One Thing? I’m working on it, but I’m not ready to share it just yet.  But, girl, oh girl,  I’m having so much fun revelling in the process!
