It was a Bad Momma Day today. Yes. Bad.
It started out great. We’re still on a quasi break, so that always totally rocks. We’ve got ta ease back into school {shhh…if you didn’t know we homeshcrool, we do. Maybe I’ll get ALL bold up in here and tell ya how that’s going…} …for all of our sakes, or my marbles might end up rolling around on the floor instead of squished up here in my hollow skull..
So, ANYWAY, we were celebrating. Celebrating the fact that my 12 year old got an A on his Comparison/Contrast paper. And NO, I didn’t do the grading of that A paper. He’s takin’ an online class {hallelujah, amen} and his teacher is da bomity-bomb-bomb…
So, OF COURSE, the achiever should get ta pick the lunch venue. But somehow, we managed to end up at the restaurant of the non-achieving child… not that he doesn’t achieve awesome achievements, it just wasn’t his day.
HOW’D THAT HAPPEN? This stinker is so slick and fast he can manipulate me without my knowin’ he’s doin’ any manipulatin’…
Little Stinker.
So, there we were, sittin’ in the parkin’ lot of Five Guys Burgers and Fries.
Now, We all LOVE Five Guys…truth. But that was NOT where we were heading at the start. Nope. Morgan wanted to go to Moe’s. Ever been there? When you walk in da do’ they yell, “WELCOME TA MOES!”… Loudly.
Anywhats, I sat there and realized that I’d we’d just been duped. So I started spitting out words. Words that weren’t so nice. Like, “How can anybody NOT like Mexican food. You must not be MY child…That’s just NOT right” and stuff. And, seriously, in my heart, I was just teasing that boy…
BUT, he started sniffling…
Bells started clangity-clanging all up in my ears…and then I hear his little voice peep up and say,
And a TON ‘a bricks dropped on my head like, well, a TON of bricks.
And I had a flash of awareness that all that ME-being I’ve been preaching was somehow makin’ it down the line into his little head.
And my heart just about shattered. And I turned around and took his face in my hands and said, “Yes, baby, you be the you-est you that you can be. And, OH, How I love that you that you are!”
And he smiled. And we laughed. And we all started talkin’ trash like we like ta do.
And he said, “I’ma go all gangsta on up on yo’!” And we laughed some more.
And then we went to eat at Moe’s. I may have slumped in the momma department, but I ain’t stoopid.
So, yes, it was a Bad Momma Day But ya know what? It was a good Gwen day, cuz I knew that I was doing something right in my life if my babies know how important it is to be themselves. Even better that they can tell me so.
Now THAT’S Awesome…

Hi Gwen! I came by on recommendation of Lauren at Our Crazy Ever After…she said your blog is great and you are super friendly. And I'm glad I checked your blog out! I am your newest follower….looking forward to reading.
Yep, good Gwen day. : )
Five Guys or Mexican food? That's a tough one!
You taught your child more with your response than a million school days.
That's a good Mama in my book.
I was homeschooled for two years. My mom decided to put me back in public school, though cuz we both would say, "If this doesn't come to an end, someone is going to die and it ain't gonna be me!" And so we thought it was best that we go our separate ways. Well just in the homeschooling department. I still lived at home until I was 18. Hah. PS-you're a good mommy. 🙂
You're a great mom! Helping them cultivate their individuality… I don't know if it's all the hormones I have going on in here, but I might just cry a little!
that is hilarious! i walked away from this post laughing and really wanting a pet skunk because that little stinker is the CUTEST.
That is awesome! You are doing a fantastic job with your boys.
good ole' eckhart t. would be proud of you tossin' that darn ego out the door when it comes to your parenting.
i think i'm gonna hafta tweet this example-of-fine-parenting-post….
Thanks for stopping by! What a funny/cute story!!! Isn't it amazing what kids will remember at the most perfect times??? Thanks for sharing!!!
A very good Gwen day – except the party where you told a lie! There ain't no way you are old enough to have a 12 year old. But your 12 year old is blessed to have you. And Moe's.
🙂
Sounds like you're a GREAT mommy, actually. It's so funny how adament kids can be about the kind of food they want/wont eat/love! 🙂
So much fun to read this. Your story telling is delightful! And it sounds like you have a blast with your boys!
