Do you have weird odors coming from your sink? Sometimes, Morgan will walk into the kitchen and he’s like…
What’s that smell?
And I’m all like…
What smell?
The thing you need to know about Morgan is that he has the senses of a pure-bread wolf. He can hear things and smell things that only the furry can. {For some reason, he didn’t get the x-ray vision. Weird, huh?}
But, once he points me in the right direction, I can get a whiff of the nasty, too!
And it’s usually either coming from the trash or the disposal. We’ve already talked about how to freshen a stinky trashcan, so today, we’re going to tackle the stinky disposal.
But we’re not going to just freshen it… we’re going to clean, sharpen and freshen it! Boojah!
What you need:
- 1 cup of Baking Soda
- 2 cups Vinegar
- 2-3 DIY Disposal Sharpeners
- Paper Towels or Rag
- All Natural All Purpose Household Cleaner
How to Clean, Sharpen and Freshen a Stinky Disposal
First, spray a paper towel or rag thoroughly with your All Natural All Purpose Household Cleaner.
Then, get up under the rubber thingies of your disposal side of the sink and wipe them clean.
Believe me… you’ll be so glad you did. It can be gross under there!
See?
And that’s just the first pass. Do it more than once until you get all the grody bits off.
Then, take 1 cup of Baking Soda and plop it in the drain.
You’ll need to push it down with your hands. It likes to just sit there on top of the rubber thingies. Just help it out a bit.
Next, take your two cups of vinegar and get ready.
You want to have your sink plug standing by.
Quickly pour the vinegar down the drain and you’ll see a nice volcanic reaction begin. Just like being back in the third grade, yeah?
Then grab the stopper and stop up the sink… quick like a bunny!
Then just wait about 10 minutes and let the baking soda and vinegar magically clean your sink. This is also a good maintenance for your drain. It will help push any bits down. I’m doing this at least once a month now. Last year, we had a bad backup and it’s NO FUN being without a kitchen sink for three days!
Hopefully, doing this often will help keep things draining smoothly.
After the ten minutes, unstop the sink and run some hot water.
Now to sharpen it, grab some DIY Disposal Sharpeners and plop a couple in while you have the disposal running. The ice helps sharpen it and the lemon helps freshen it!
And now you have a fresh, clean and sharpened disposal!

Hi Gwen,
I did make this right away and have been using these since then. Works great and I really needed it. Haven’t had a disposal before and didn’t know what to do – – had to look up the instructions on line. I had used the same ingredients before without much success. Freezing made a big difference in the odor removal, as well as cleaning the underside of the pointy “skirt.” Love it!!! Thanks again

Awesome, Barbara!

actually the black plastic cover for the disposal is easily removed– you should pull it off about 1x/week and hose it down. It is seriously disgusting and stinks. Sticking your hand in there with a paper towel does NOT clean it nearly enough!
Also, you don’t need to buy disposal sharpeners: just throw ice in there; you’re not putting harsh chemicals out into the earth, just water, and the ice sharpens the blades naturally and easily.
