The DIY Picture Board

a play in two scenes…

diy picture board

Setting:  The Breakfast Nook

Gwen is sitting at the table working diligently.  The cat, Cookie, sits nearby grooming her luxuriously Siamese-esk coat.  Hot Shot, the obedient black lab,  lies at her feet, gazing adoringly at her.

In the background, sounds of happily playing brothers sift through the air like powdered sugar landing on a freshly fried apple pie.
Enter: The Husband, Morgan.

“What’s that you’re making, Dearest Darling of mine.  That looks like a killer piece of art!”  he says lovingly astonished.

“Why, my schmoopie-whoopie, thank you.  No, it’s not art, it’s just my take on a memo board. But how sweet of you to call it art, my love.”

The two kiss gingerly on the lips as Morgan exits into the kitchen to pour himself a deliciously dark cup of roasted Keyna AA that Gwen so thoughtfully made for him earlier in anticipation of his return from a hard day at the office.

End Scene.
O.K.  All right, all right. That’s not what really happened.  Here’s how it really went.

Setting: Still at the Breakfast Nook

Gwen sits frustrated as a zillion sharp tentacles of wire poke her fingers as she tries to assemble her latest project.  Cookie, the cat, keeps trying to capture said tentacles as they look enticingly like a cat toy.

Hot Shot, the overweight-110lb black monster, moans at her feet, intermittently nibbling her apron because he’s a big baby and needs her attention.

In the background, sounds of punches and grunts fly through the air as brothers pound the day-lights out of each other for absolutely no apparent reason.

Enter: The Husband, Morgan.

“What in the world are you doing.  It looks like Serial-Killer Art!”

“Thanks a lot.  I guess you’d better watch your back tonight…” she responds, properly offended, as she returns to the mess in front of her.

Morgan laughs and turns to see the pile of dirty dishes flanking the coffee pot that sits cold and empty.

End Scene.
So, it’s definitely not “Killer Art” nor is it “Serial Killer Art”.  Hmph.

But, well, it is different, no?

Here’s how I did it.

Materials:

1 repurposed frame

A strip of cardboard cut to the length of the frame backing

Enough fabric to wrap around Frame Backing and batting if desired

Wire

Mini-Clothespins

Duct Tape

Instructions:

1. Prepare your frame to your liking and paint Mini-Clothes pins if desired.  (I did so they wouldn’t stand out sooo much against the Fabric)

2.  Wrap batting around Frame backing, secure to back. I just used my regular stapler and stapled it to the cardboard.

3.   Repeat with Fabric.  With the fabric, I just used fusible 1/4″ tape. You can get it at any fabric store.

4.  Punch small holes in strip of cardboard, thread and secure wires through holes.

5. Tape Cardboard strip to top of the Frame backing.
6. Fold wires over to the front.

7.  Place backing in frame and secure.

8.  Cut wires to varying length.  I wrapped mine around a pencil to get a springy effect.

9.  Tie wires to Mini-clothes pins and clip some stuff on it.

It gives a nice, three-dimensional texture to the wall.

As you can see, I’m still trying to subliminally beg teach my boys to get along.
I also made this little printable that is hanging on a clip board above; I’ll share more about it in a couple of days:>)

The only major problem I have now is that this is where I used to hang my aprons.  I keep going back there to try and hang them up!  Man, one project always seems to lead to another…

So, that’s how you, too, can have your very own Serial Killer Art. Easy-peasy lemon squeezy.

And Cookie, she wants it back…
