Project Surface Area Day 2: Finding my Footing

It’s not easy or fun to take your time, is it?  But after re-reading yesterday’s post, my brain started hollering at me so loudly I had to stop and listen to it.

Here’s how the conversation went:

Brain:  Girl, what are you doing?

Me:  I’m building a desk type thingy for the den cuz we haven’t enough places to spread all of our junk out, and I’m sick of piles on the dining room table.

Brain: Duh. I know that already.  I mean, WHAT ARE YOU DOING?  If you slap that thing together, it’s going to look like your Reclaimed Truss Headboard all over again, and we both know how you flippped the flop over how that turned out, don’t we?

Me: Ummm…yeah.

Brain:  You don’t want THAT to happen do you?  I mean, to spend hours on a project rushing to finish it, then decide you hate it, and then decide you have to live with it because you don’t have any money to hire Sarah Richardson to fix your mess.

Me: {silence}

Brain:  So, you had better think. Think design.  Think furniture.  Think…Oh, good grief!  Just use your Brain!

Me:  Ummm…hello?  Isn’t that what’s going on here right now?

Brain:  It is if you’ll listen to me and stop making me have to yell at you.

Me:  Ok.  I hear you.  I’ll slow down and take my time.  {Maybe}

Brain:  I can hear that dummy. I’m in your head.

Me:  Sorry.  Super sorry.  Now be quiet so’s I can think.

The End…well not really, but I’ll stop with the internal dialogue now…

1. First. Numero Uno. Erste.

If you don’t want it to look like you built this thing out of hugemo 2×12’s that you aquired from a muddy construction site, you must consider what details you can add to make it resemble something along the lines of furniture.

Furniture.  Hmmm..

It often has feet.

2. Secundus. Zweite. Dos.

Use rulers. Curved ones are super coolio.

3.  Dritte. Tres. Trius.

Feet make dirty boards look like Furniture. Sort of.  But, you’re on the right track, yes?

Cubby feet

4. Quattro. Vierte. {running out of my extensive knowledge of numbers in foreign languages…}

Counter-sink the screws.  Yes, I know it takes extra time cuz you don’t have the actual right size drill bit, but you won’t have screws sticking out of the sides of the cubbies.  Slammin’…

5. Fünfte.  Five. Five-O.

One down.  One 2 G.O.

6. Numero Six-O.

Two cubbies down.  Sort of…

2 Cubbies

K. Brain.  Make a note we need to go to HD and get some of those little shelf holder pluggy things so we can put the shelves in.

Nope…that shelf is hanging there defying gravity. Cool, huh?  {she says as it slams down on the ground}

Purdy good day, wouldn’t you say?

‘Cept I didn’t tell you about how un-square all of my cuts are b/c my circular saw is too small to go through the entire piece of wood, and I had to use the jig saw that would rather get jiggy-with-it than cut a straight line…but no one will ever know…probably…maybe…

Well…except you.  But you can keep a secret, right?

  6. Gwen…those are a way cute size. I need some of those in every room. I got the square "chicken wire" at Ace in the garden section (HD I'm sure has it too). It's not called chicken wire. Make sure your tin snips are nice and sharp – it's not as easy to cut as real chicken wire. Good luck.

  7. nice and sturdy looking! definitely something I need in my house! I just don't have any of those tools… for now I'll wait to see it finished and dream about making something like that!
