This is such an amazing cranberry sauce recipe!

I grew up eating cranberry sauce from a can. You know the round, gelatinous slices that taste like sour patch kids gone wrong?

Meh. Never was a fan of cranberry sauce… or so I thought.

When I was a teenager, my mom started making it from scratch. Much, much better. I started to become a fan.

But now. NOW??? Oh my word. I figured out exactly how to make it and what to add to it to give it that elevation every holiday meal deserves!

You can add pumpkin pie spice in place of the cinnamon and nutmeg. It’s also super delicious!

If you’re not a die-hard cranberry sauce fan, I hope you love this recipe and it changes your mind about cranberry sauce forever!

Elevate your Cranberry Sauce game with this tangy, sweet, citrusy cranberry sauce!

Ingredients

  • 12 ounce bag of fresh cranberries, rinsed
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1/2 cup Pulp Free Orange Juice (you can juice your own if you want to)
  • 3/4 cup packed light or dark brown sugar
  • 1/8 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Zest your orange
  2. Juice your orange juice if making your own.
  3. In a saucepan, add cranberries, water, orange juice, and brown sugar together and cook on medium heat until it comes to a gentle simmer. When you start to see small bubbles, reduce heat to low-medium. Stirring occasionally, cook the cranberries until the liquid has reduced and your cranberries are bursting and soft.
  4. Remove from heat and allow to cool. It will thicken as it cools.

Notes

You can keep the cranberry sauce in the refrigerator for 4-5 days.

You can also make it up to a month ahead and freeze in a freezer zip loc bag.

What else could you add to the best cranberry sauce recipe?

I’ve never tried it, but I think some dark cherries would be a delicious addition!

Or try using lime instead of orange. That might be a nice twist!

I love cranberry sprite. I can only imagine that might be good!

Whatever you decide, it will be yummy. Just because it’s homemade and not a round disk you sliced from a can!

FAQs about cranberry sauce

Have some questions? Let’s see some answers!

Absolutely. I would say no more than about a month. If you make it at Thanksgiving, just double the recipe and freeze the other half for Christmas – or whatever winter holiday you celebrate!

You can put it in a tupperware container or a Ziploc bag made for the freezer. Try to squeese the air out of the bag as you seal it.

Better than both, vacuum seal it if you have a vacuum sealer!

Yes! The best fruit to add would be Dark Cherries or Strawberries. But blueberries or banana might be a fun experiement!

My go to is to make stuffed French toast with the cranberry sauce and cream cheese.

I also like to add it to my grits. Yes. I’m very southern, I know!
