There is no amount of stuff that will ever make you happy. Â I think we all know this deep down but get lost along the way trying to fill our lives with beautiful things to make ourselves feel better.
Now, I love stuff. Â I want a beautiful and meaning-filled home. Â I LOVE to decorate and make things. Â It’s a huge part of who I am. Â I can’t separate it from myself, but I am learning to separate it from my Self.
I’ve been reading a lot of books this year about being happy.
I just finished The Untethered Soul by Michael A. Singer {<=amazon affiliate link} and found it to be inspiring and enlightening.  I loved his take on letting go and just deciding to be happy.
I shared this quote on my Facebook page yesterday:
Events don’t determine whether or not you’re going to be happy. They’re just events. You determine whether or not you are going to be happy. You can be happy to just be alive. You can be happy having all these things happen to you, and then be happy to die. If you can live this way, your heart will be so open and your spirit so free, that you will soar up to the heavens.
It takes practice to just let go.
His description of how you can feel yourself closing up is spot on. Â When something disturbs me, I can literally feel my heart tighten. Â See if you can notice it happening to you. By relaxing my chest and my shoulders, I can physically feel my heart begin to open and release so the energy can flow through me again. Â It’s really crazy.
Basically, the most important message from the book is to stay open.  Staying open keeps your energy and life expanding.  That expansive feeling is what gives daily life light and joy.
In part V, Chapter 15, the path of unconditional happiness , Michael writes an imaginary dialogue between God and a sad person and, then a happy person. Reading just that section really puts things in perspective.  If you were God came down and asked one of your creations how they were doing, what would you want to hear?  Wow.  It stops my heart just to think of what God wants for me… how God longs for me to enjoy God’s creation and this little sliver of life that I get to experience! It really puts things in perspective.
So, this week, I challenge you to just be happy.
Whether storms rage around you or money drops from the sky.  Whether you get an unexpected bonus or experience a devastating loss, decide to be happy.  Just like yoga, look at it as a daily practice. I’m amazed at how much more quickly I notice changes in my moods, and how much easier it is to lighten up by releasing and relaxing my heart.
I made that quote from above into a printable if you want to print it out and keep it as a reminder.
