Do you ever walk into a store, see something that inspires you and then get lots of crazy looks as you walk out the door with tomato cages in the middle of winter to make Tomato Cage Christmas Trees?
Uh-huh. Yeah. Me, too.
So, it actually all started when we were looking to replace our sad, little Walmart Christmas tree. And I saw those tomato cages {which were upside down} outside by the greenery.
And my heart said to my brain…
Those really look a lot like Christmas trees.
And my brain said,
Huh. They kinda do. But you’re crazy. And Morgan is with you, so he’ll really think you’ve lost it, girl!
So, I left empty handed.
And then, on Tuesday, I COULDN’T TAKE IT ANYMORE!
My heart kept beating the drums as loud as they could until I just gave in, drove back to the store and confidently bought 2 tomato cages.
In the dead of winter.
Tomato Cage Christmas Trees
How to make Tomato Cage Christmas Trees:
What you need:
- 2 tomato cages
- Small white lights
- Large White Lights
- Duck Tape – This is black, which I’ll use to tape them to the planters next time. The silver is fine for the top.
- Large Planters
Instructions:
Tape the scary, sticky ends together in a point with some heavy-duty tape.
For a “wow” factor, tape the bottom of the cage to a big planter… (or stake them in the dirt if you have some kind of plant or tent stakes)
Then take your string lights and wrap them around and around your tomato cage creating a real tree-like shape.
At this point, I had to stop to recover my equilibrium. Just watch out or you’ll end up on your rump like Lucille Ball in every episode she ever made.
Not sayin’ I did. Not sayin’ I didn’t.
Tip: Use two different sizes of lights. I stole that tip from Mandi. Thank you, Mandi. I’m so glad I didn’t have to have a tomato cage tree with just one size of lights. That would’ve been one instance when ignorance was NOT Bliss.
(However, our porch is like a wind-tunnel and the trees kept falling over and the glass bulbs kept breaking, so beware if you have the same problem. Try to find large plastic lights instead of glass. I’m going to do that next time for sure!)
Regardless, the two sizes of lights are terribly beautiful. This is Bliss…
I have some greenery for the transom, but this year, I thought it might look simply lovely to just have these large white bulbs go around the door.
I love the simplicity of having just a string of lights framing the front entryway. These days I’m drawn more to simplicity that I have been in the past. Bold doesn’t always have to be in your face. Sometimes, boldness is having some restraint, especially if you are used to going all out.
So, to all those people in the hardware store that were giving me those, “You’re a werido” looks…
I say,
LOOK AT ME NOW! I’M THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD WITH TOMATO CAGE CHRISTMAS TREES AND IT’S AWESOME, YO.
It is awesome, right? {As she looks around to see if anyone is giving her those weirdo looks again.}

you are so clever!!!
By golly… I think I occasionally might be ! Hahaha!
looks fabulous! how much do tomato cages cost anyway?
Thanks, Jocie! These were about 5 bucks! Can’t beat that, yo.
You’re not a weirdo…I still need to put lights out. These are great!
Thank you, Jenny! Our icicles kept falling down so we opted for a minimalist version this year!
I truly, madly, deeply LOVE your tomato cage. Christmas trees!! What an amazing idea.
Ha! Thank you, Donna! They were super easy to make!
Think I might try this next year. Looks great and imaginative. Very creative.
I made one of these and used four 9 ft. strands of prelit garland. I plan to do another one for next year. Looked great with christmas balls on it outside and could even be used inside for a person that has very little space to sit on a table and decorate.
this is such a greaT idea! I love it. Thanks for sharing
This was the first time that I have ever tried tomato cages for Christmas trees and let me tell you, what an awesome idea , it came out great
I plan on doing them for a Christmas theme I will have in a couple years. I picked up color ones from Ace’s. Then I found one walking my dog in the garbage got it and spray painted it. Then the other day walking my dog again I found 2 more. I am really into this……..
Yours are taller than the ones I have seen. Nice job done and I like the second strand of bigger lights on them too.
Diane,
Thank you and thanks for sharing! Have fun!

Being a professional tomato farmer, this will be perfect for us! Thank you so much for this cute idea! Our friends and family will be sure to love this! 🙂
How perfect, Nancy! You could really go to town on this project!
Thank you so much for this idea! I usually put lights on anything that stands still (all white lights, done tastefully, not tacky) because I love lights. But this year I just wasn’t motivated. Then I saw your idea (saw the picture, didn’t read the article til just now though). I grabbed three different size cages and got to work I accidentally discovered that I could wrap a set of net lights, usually used for bushes, around the cages and save myself some time. I zip tied the lights to the wire in different locations to secure the lights. Then, I arranged all three just off my front porch, stapled them down into the ground so they won’t blow over (I didn’t use pots) and waited for it to get dark. I loved them, but to add just a pop of color, I went back and wrapped a single strand of colored lights. They are so beautiful!
Very cool, Candace!
Thought of this idea several times for a couple of years, just never did do them but after seeing them it got me in the mood again. Very clever and not expensive. Thanks
Martha,
Thanks for sharing! Have fun with it.

I’m so doing this! Thanks for the idea. I think I will add in one strand of coloured lights too just to tie in the colour with the rest of my house!
These are indeed great trees I made these over 8 years ago before Pinterest came about I think. They are very budget friendly, thanks for reminding me
I am about to do the same thing.
