I love to read, but I feel like a bum lately.  I seriously can’t remember the last novel I even read, so if you have a recommendation, I feel a session of binge reading coming on and would LOVE to hear what you book you’d recommend.

To get me ready, I took a few minutes today to make this simple DIY Fabric Bookmark.  I’ve been wanting to do it for a while, and today was the first day back to school.  You know what that means, right?  Silence.  And uninterrupted time to work.

I love my guys, but my brain is rattling a little bit after summer.  I was almost a little bit freaked out by how quiet it was.

This DIY Fabric Bookmark is a simple sewing project for the book lover! This would be a great way to add a personal touch if you are ever giving books for gifts!

But I quickly recovered.  It’s a miracle.

If you are new to sewing, this project is perfect for you!  It really couldn’t be simpler.

What you need:

  • 2 strips of fabric, 2 1/2″ wide by 30″ long – but we’ll talk about that in a minute
  • 15″ strip of 1/2″ elastic
  • Safety Pin for threading elastic

If you have a particular book in mind, measure around the front cover. You might need to adjust your measurements, though the dimensions I give will work on pretty much any normal size book. (I think.)

First,  place your strips right side together and stitch down both long ends of the fabric.

Trim seam to 1/8″.

Turn right side out and iron.

Then top-stitch 1/4″ seam from each side.

Attach the safety pin to the end of the elastic and thread it through the opening in your tube.

When the ends are even, stitch across to secure before pulling the safety pin all the way through.

Now you can finish pulling the elastic to the other edge.  Stitch the other end to secure.

Matching the edges together, stitch in place.  Make sure it’s not twisted around itself before you stitch.

Trim and zig-zag the unfinished edges.

Turn it over and straighten it out.

What do you think? Wouldn’t this would be a great way to add a personal touch if you are ever giving books for gifts!
