Success is not a destination, but the road that you’re on. Being successful means that you’re working hard and walking your walk every day. You can only live your dream by working hard towards it. That’s living your dream. ~Marlon Wayans
Hi there! Welcome to the very first episode of the Redefining Bold Podcast. I’m your host Gwen Whitfield from theboldabode.com, where I guide warm-hearted women in their quest for a more organized, cleaner home and a more productive and vibrant life.
Welcome! I’m so excited to be here and finally watch this long awaited dream of mine become a reality. Before we begin, I just wanted to interrupt this episode a little bit. What you will here in just a minute was recorded quite a bit before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. So I wanted to interrupt this introduction with acknowledgment of what is going on and how different things are right now. But not only are we dealing with Covid-19, here in the U.S. we’re seeing a rallying cry for social justice and anit-racism, and I pray that we come through this time with real, tangible reform and progress.
So now, let’s hear what this podcast is going to be about and a little bit of background info about your host!
On the Redefining Bold podcast, we’re going to talk about a lot of things, all to do with creating simple habits and routines that will, over time, be life-changing. The idea of being Bold is a big one. Having big, hairy, audacious goals is awesome… and daunting. But when you make those goals, but then break them down into smaller, actionable steps, they don’t seem so big and hairy after all.
We’re going to talk about things like being present, chasing the feeling, following through and having self-compassion.
We’re going to talk about design and home decor and how the external affects the internal and vise/versa.
We’re going to figure out how to keep going even when we face challenges.
Big wins come from small, steady advances, and that’s what Redefining Bold is all about!
As far as the schedule goes, for the first month, I’ll be releasing 2 new podcasts each week, then moving to a weekly episode each and every Wednesday. You can subscribe in your favorite podcast app or sign up for my weekly newsletter at theboldabode.com/subscribe so you never miss an episode.

Now, a little bit about me.
Again, my name is Gwen Whitfield, and I grew up in Memphis Tn. From there, I attended the University of Mississippi and graduated with a degree in Music Education.
I love to sing and had a concentration in vocal music. I won’t bore you to death about my history, but I had some success in state and regional competitions, but I just hated auditioning. I didn’t have the mental tools that I have today and standing in front of judges on an unfamiliar
state scared the pants off of me. I never wanted to be a performer, but I was pushed to go that route, even though I tried very hard not to.
After I graduated, I got married and worked for a bank until my boys came along. I’ve spent the better part of 20 years staying at home being a wife and mother. I wouldn’t change it for the world. There were times when I worked part time outside the home, putting my husband through graduate school and when other opportunities arose that worked within our schedule.
When I started the Bold Abode, in 2011, I did so with no intention of it being a business. Over the years, I learned how to make money with my website and that has been a huge blessing in our lives. Of course, there have been ups and downs with the changes in search and social media algorithms, which brings me to where we are today.
I’m making some changes with The Bold Abode, and this podcast, I hope, will be a huge part of those changes.
I have always had this deep sense of knowing in my bones that I was meant to serve. That there was a bigger purpose for my life, beyond just making things and sharing them on the internet, but I have literally always gotten in my own way.
So a few years ago, I was a guest on the podcast, Style Matters, and we talked about design and color, which is why I started my website, The Bold Abode… to share my home/diy/design projects. And we talked about how my style was evolving from bold colors on the walls everywhere to a more neutral palette with bold colors here and there.
And in passing I said the words, Redefining Bold. And that has stuck with me ever since.
Now, one person’s bold might be just getting out of bed each day and putting one foot in front of the other, and another’s might be scaling the crags of Mt. Everest.
But here’s the thing… we each get to define with Bold means to us. My bold is not your bold and your bold is not my bold.
My purpose with this podcast is to explore and wrestle with life and mindset and take small, actionable steps to create the home and life that we dream of. Whether you dream of simply having a clean and organized home, or you want to create a happier, more meaningful purpose for your life.
We’ll be talking about how small habits have a huge impact and that by showing up each and every day, we can intentionally create a life that is happier, more peaceful and filled with purpose.
The dream doesn’t just appear magically one day. It is in the daily disciplines we create that move us closer one step at a time.
I’ve seen this with my youngest son, Brendan, who is a competitive swimmer. When you watch him at the meets, and he achieves one of this goals while making it look easy, it might seem like magic. But it’s the hours and hours each week that he spends in grueling practice. Day after day, with focus and determination, working through sets that would make your head spin.
And when he hits a bump in the road, like getting DQ’d at a big meet in an event he was seeded to win by a huge margin, I watch him shake it off and jump right back in for the next event.
I’ve learned some important lessons from him, from both my boys as they strive toward their own goals.
Persevering is hard. It’s definitely not for the faint of heart. But it is a muscle and can be cultivated. It can be grown. And it’s the process that matters. The each and every day of it.
A clean, well-organized, magazine worthy home might be the end goal, but it’s the little daily and weekly habits that matter. A beautiful, purposeful, meaningful, fulfilling life might be the end goal, but it’s the living of it that is the dream.
And so, I leave you with the eloquent words of Marlon Wayans,
Success is not a destination, but the road that you're on. Being successful means that you're working hard and walking your walk every day. You can only live your dream by working hard towards it. That's living your dream.
